How to Get to Bocas del Toro: Every Route
Bocas del Toro is an archipelago on Panama's Caribbean coast, so every route ends with a short boat ride across turquoise water to the islands. Here are all the ways in —by plane, by bus, or from Costa Rica— with real 2026 times and prices, plus how to reach La Selva at Paunch Beach.
Most travelers arrive on Isla Colón, home to Bocas town —and to us. Pick your starting point.
By plane from Panama City (the fast way)
The most comfortable option. Air Panama flies several times a day from Albrook Airport (PAC) —the domestic terminal, not Tocumen— to Bocas del Toro Airport (BOC), on Isla Colón.
- Duration: about 50 minutes.
- Price: from ~$75–120 each way (2026), depending on how early you book and the season.
- Frequency: 2–4 flights daily. They fill up in high season, so book as soon as you have dates.
If you land at Tocumen (international), Albrook is ~40 minutes away by taxi/Uber. It's worth spending a night in the city —Casco Viejo is the prettiest area— and flying to Bocas the next day. From Bocas airport (BOC) to La Selva is a 10–15 minute taxi ride.
By overnight bus + water taxi (the budget way)
- Route: Albrook Terminal (Panama City) → Almirante.
- Duration: about 10 hours, overnight.
- Price: ~$35–40 per person.
- Departures: between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m., arriving 6:00–7:30 a.m.
In Almirante, a short taxi (~$1) takes you to the dock. From there a water taxi crosses to Bocas town: 20–30 minutes, ~$6–8 per person. The last boat is usually around 6:00 p.m. — plan ahead so you don't get stranded.
From Costa Rica (Puerto Viejo / San José)
Door-to-door shuttle. Companies like Caribe Shuttle run San José → Bocas for ~$80 each way: leave at 6:00 a.m. and arrive around 4:00 p.m., including lunch, a border guide and the boat leg. From Puerto Viejo or Cahuita it's shorter and cheaper. You cross the Sixaola–Guabito border; keep Costa Rica's exit fee (~$8) handy.
By plane. There are seasonal flights San José (SJO) → Bocas (~$70), only a few days a week — check availability for your dates.
How to reach La Selva from Bocas town
We're at Paunch Beach, Isla Colón, 10–15 minutes from Bocas town —just far enough to wake to the sound of the sea and howler monkeys.
- By taxi: 10–15 minutes from town, ~$4–5 per person. Any taxi knows the Paunch area.
- Arranged transfer: message us before you arrive and we'll organize your ride from the airport or dock.
Find us on Google Maps as La Selva (Paunch Beach). The local reference is up the hill along Paunch, just past Paki Point.

Tips from people who live here
- Book flights early: planes are small and fill fast in high season (Dec–Apr and Jul–Aug).
- Carry cash (US dollars): ATMs on the islands are few. Taxis and boats are cash only.
- Don't cut the last water taxi close: if you'd reach Almirante late, sleep nearby or fly.
- Coordinate your arrival with us and we'll tell you the exact boat or taxi for your time.
