Where to Stay in Bocas del Toro: An Area Guide
In Bocas, the area you choose shapes your whole trip. It's an archipelago, so sleeping in the buzz of town is nothing like waking up to jungle and sea. Here's our honest guide to the areas, so you can pick yours.
Still sorting the logistics? See how to get to Bocas del Toro.
Bocas town (Isla Colón)
The heart of the archipelago: restaurants, bars, dive shops and the water-taxi dock, all on foot. It's lively and loud. Ideal if you want to be in the middle of the action and go out at night without a taxi.
Paunch and Bluff (east Isla Colón) — where we are
The quiet side of Isla Colón, 10–15 minutes from town (~$4–5 by taxi). It's all about beach, surf and nature: sand, waves and easygoing beach spots like Paunch Beach Club, Skully's, Paki Point, Arboloco and La Coralina. It's where La Selva is, and the ideal area if you want to switch off, surf, or a jungle-and-sea holiday without being far from everything.
Isla Carenero
Five minutes by boat from town, but with a much slower pace. It has over-water places to eat and drink (Aqua Lounge, Bibi's) and a good balance of calm and proximity.
Isla Bastimentos and Old Bank
Afro-Caribbean culture, jungle and beaches like Red Frog or Wizard. It's more remote and authentic: perfect if you want nature and local charm and don't mind relying on the boat.
Solarte, Boca del Drago and Starfish
The most remote, natural corners of the archipelago, for truly getting away. Fewer services, more silence.
