One Week in Bocas del Toro: A 7-Day Itinerary
Seven well-spaced days for the best of the archipelago without rushing: beaches, a day island-hopping by boat, surf, jungle, and time to do nothing at all by the sea. This is the plan we'd put together ourselves.
To get here and get around, see how to get to Bocas del Toro and where to stay by area.
Day 1 — Arrival and settling in
Arrive on Isla Colón, settle into the quiet Paunch area and slow down. Sunset on the beach with a cold beer at Paunch Beach Club or Skully's. An unhurried dinner (see where to eat).
Day 2 — Beaches and surf on Isla Colón
A morning by the water: if you surf, check Paunch on foot from the lodge; if you're learning, a lesson at Black Rock or Wizard (see the surf guide). In the afternoon, bike to Bluff Beach to walk its orange sand.
Day 3 — Archipelago boat tour
The highlight: a full-day boat tour to the Zapatilla Cays, Dolphin Bay and snorkeling at Coral Cay, with lunch over the water. Book a day ahead (see things to do).
Day 4 — Starfish Beach and Boca del Drago
Cross to the northwest of the island to see the starfish in crystal-clear water (never lift them out) and eat fresh seafood at Yarisnori, right by the beach.
Day 5 — Isla Bastimentos
A day of jungle and culture: Red Frog Beach and its tiny red frogs, Wizard Beach, the Nivida bat cave, and a stop at Up In The Hill for a cacao coffee and its banana cake.
Day 6 — Rest by the sea
A day with no plans: a hammock, one last surf, or simply the sound of jungle and waves from La Selva. If you like, a yoga class or a massage.
Day 7 — Last beach and departure
A calm morning, some craft shopping in town, and off you go. Leave a buffer for the boat and the flight (see how to get here / leave).
